I relied heavily on Save the Cat! for my first novel, as well as 7 figure fiction. Although 7 figure fiction is salesy in its title, I found it way more helpful for loose structuring than the rigidity of Save the Cat! Still good to have STC as a reference, but for those who can get bogged down in the details, it could be detrimental.

Also I preordered SPRING, SUMMER, ASTEROID, BIRD: The Art of Eastern Storytelling by Henry Lien!

How did I miss the pre-order for this book? My nerdy structure-loving self is so excited!

So many books on structure. I've definitely read, Save the Cat, but right now, I'm working with Story Genius. I seem to flip around depending on what my needs are. Another favourite for me on structure is, Structuring Your Novel, by K.M. Weiland. And then I throw in the, Virgin's Promise by Kim Hudson, to get the flavour of the Heroine's journey. If you use Scrivener, you can download a structure template from K.M. Weiland, as well.

Thank you for this comprehensive nerding out! I am currently reading Save the Cat (Writes a Novel), as recommended by our mutual dear friend Jill Margo. As a person that thought about stucture exactly zero times while writing my first draft, I can already see how this view will help with my re-write. And a little Vonnegut doesn't hurt!

Read it, learn it, and then forget you know it when you sit down to write. :)

I have been on a summer break, so I just read this now and it's excellent. Appreciating you, as always, for your smart and funny view of things!
